During most of the 19th Century, the main industry in Muhlenberg County was agriculture and tobacco. Coal Mining
was the most important business during the 20th Century. At one time there were many men employed in under-ground
mining and when strip minning became predominant, Muhlenberg became the largest coal producing county in the USA
